As Seattle Public Schools continued negotiations with its teachers’ union, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson announced Tuesday that if negotiations or a union strike delay the school year, the city will provide free recreation drop-in programs at community centers and parks across the city.
“As a mother and working parent, I recognize the vital work that educators provide for our children, and also the stress that families face when our public schools are not functioning,” Wilson said. Wilson also announced the centers in an Instagram post.
According to the Mayor’s Office, students entering kindergarten through sixth grade are eligible to enroll in programs hosted by Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Associated Recreation Council.
Information on how to register is available here. The programs are free, but registration is required.
The office also announced that, in the event of a strike, meals will be available September 2-4, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The office says the preschool programs are set to start on Tuesday, September 8; however, if a strike continues past the 8th, preschool programs at the parks will also be delayed.
Seattle Preschool Program Information
Seattle Preschool Program (SPP) sites operated by SPS are scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 8. If a strike continues through September 8, preschool will be delayed at those sites.
SPP sites operated by community organizations, including those at Seattle Parks and Recreation locations, will open as scheduled on September 8.
Child Care Assistance Program
The office also said families already on the City’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) will automatically receive additional subsidies to cover costs associated with full-day care if their provider has capacity.
Families enrolled in before- or after-school childcare in an SPS building should contact their childcare provider directly regarding operating hours.

Finally, the office included a list of licensed providers with open spots for families seeking full-time care. The office said families should contact providers directly to confirm availability and learn about enrollment requirements, cost, and other information.
