Marysville PD warns drivers to take train crossings seriously and safely

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — Marysville police are begging people to make better choices as the alarming trend of crossing train tracks while the arms are down continues.

They say officers are conducting emphasis patrols to ticket drivers breaking the law.

MPD Sgt. David McKenna tells us it’s a scenario happening more and more in the heart of downtown Marysville.

“As soon as the lights are flashing, the arms start to come down, or they’re all the way down... they’re just racing through, trying to cut those off,” Sgt. McKenna said.

He said because of this, officers spent their morning looking for those who don’t take their safety seriously.

“We had 39 stops, 32 infractions issued, 2 arrests for suspended license, and we issued 7 warnings,” Sgt. McKenna said.

He said luckily nobody was hurt, but that hasn’t always been the case.

“The engineers on the trains have to live with the repercussions of what happens to those people [if the car is hit],” said Sgt. McKenna.

Sgt. McKenna has one last warning for those who think they can cross in time as the horn is blowing.

“Just slow down. We want you to get where you need to get, but we also want to make sure you get there safely,” added Sgt. McKenna.

Officers say if the problem continues, they will put patrols along the tracks again to look for people breaking the law.
