SEATTLE — Woodland Park Zoo’s brand-new Lorikeet Landing is opening on Labor Day, Monday, September 7.
It’s located in Wild Encounters, which is the zoo’s hub for up-close animal experiences.
“Become absorbed in a world of living color, sound, and motion as an array of energetic parrots flutter and perch nearby, moving freely from the ground to the treetops in the walk-through aviary,” staff shared.
The aviary is included in the cost of admission. For an additional fee, guests can purchase a nectar feeding cup to share with the lorikeets.
Lorikeets are medium-sized arboreal parrots that are native to tropical areas of Australia and surrounding islands in the southern Pacific where flowers bloom year-round.
The birds have a brush-like tongue that enables them to dine on pollen and nectar, unlike other parrots. Lorikeet Landing also invites guests to test their observation skills by learning about lorikeet body language and how to identify each parrot species based on the educational signage in the space.
The opening of Lorikeet Landing is part of phase one for Wild Encounters. Phase one also includes the addition of two rescued female Aldabra giant tortoises – which is one of the world’s largest land tortoises. It joined the zoo thanks to the generosity of a longtime zoo donor.
Phase two of Wild Encounters is scheduled to open in 2027. It will bring the ambassador animals program center stage. There will be flexible, viewable habitats to support a rotating cast of animals such as capybara, coati, three-banded armadillo, North American porcupine, striped skunk, African-crested porcupine, raptors, kookaburra, blue-faced honeyeaters, and more.
