Looking for a fireworks show or other July 4 event? Here are some Tacoma-area options

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — As the Fourth of July approaches, community events are being promoted that encourage people to spend the holiday with others for the first time in two years.

Whether you want to kick the day off with a run or listen to live music or visit food and craft vendors, there are a variety of ways to celebrate, including professional fireworks shows.

Here are some events:

A GRAND OLD STEILACOOM JULY 4

The event begins at 9 a.m. and will kick off with a fun run at town hall in Steilacoom. A street fair also will open on Lafayette Street.

According to a promotional flyer, events will be happening all day, including a parade at 1 p.m., tribal museum tours and a family street dance.

A fireworks show will cap off the celebration at 10 p.m.

TACOMA SUMMER BLAST

After a three-year hiatus, Tacoma Summer Blast is back. With food trucks, live music and craft vendors, any person of any age can attend the event, which is sponsored by Metro Parks Tacoma and the City of Tacoma.

The Summer Blast celebration will take place on the Ruston Way Waterfront at Cummings Park and Dune Peninsula at Point Defiance. According to Metro Parks Tacoma, the celebration is expected to start at noon and close with a fireworks show over Commencement Bay that begins at 10 p.m.

At Cummings Park, the Family Zone will have free activities for the kids.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 5K

Those looking to get a run in to kick off Independence Day can register for the Tacoma Independence Day 5K.

The ninth annual run will be held in the morning, with the first event starting at 8 a.m. There will be a 5K run and a kids 1K run.

The 5K will start at North 37th and North Vassault streets and end at the WaterWalk Mural at Point Ruston’s Grand Plaza, which is the start/finish location for the kids run.

Registered participants will receive a 5K medal or a 1K finisher ribbon, a 5K tank top and collective bib. Other merchandise will be available for purchase at registration.

According to the event’s website, participants’ race packet pickup will happen at Fleet Feet Tacoma on Sunday, July 3, 1-5 p.m. Participants will receive their race bib and a goody bag.

People can register online at tcmaevents.com/independence-day-5k/, with online registration open until Saturday. Late registration will be available at the packet pickup and on race day. Packet pickups will also be available on race day 6:30-7:45 a.m.
