A Lacey firefighter paramedic will be off the job for months after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash Monday. His family is now asking for help.
Brandon Alderman told KIRO 7 he fractured three vertebrae and his thumb. He estimates it will be 8-12 weeks before his bones are healed, but it will take even longer to get healthy enough to return to his first responder duties.
“It’s just incredibly humbling,” Alderman said.
Brandon and Rebecca Alderman are career public servants. They met at St. Peter Hospital in Olympia during COVID. He would deliver patients there, and she worked as a crisis social worker.
They are now married and have a three-year-old son, but things are difficult.
“Knowing that we just need to open our arms and seek support is kind of a shift for us,” Rebecca Alderman said.
Rebecca made plans to leave work and focus on her health after being diagnosed with a rare medical condition that has already caused her to have two strokes. Then, on Monday, the motorcycle crash happened.
Brandon said an uninsured driver turned in front of him.
“I knew as soon as I hit the ground that I was injured,” he said.
The couple now has no income stream, mounting medical issues and a young son they need to take care of.
A friend launched a GoFundMe campaign to support them while they get back on their feet. It’s already earned more than $10,000.
“These people really represent joy and kindness and giving,” Zach Lynch, a friend of the couple who started the campaign, said. “I just hope people recognize how important it is to elevate and support people like this.”
The Aldermans have spent years helping others and now need help themselves. It is a difficult transition, but they’re impressed with how people are stepping up so far.
“As someone who is always giving other people help, it makes me emotional when I am not normally an emotional person,” Brandon said.
