Kittitas County Sheriff's Department creates community journal for fallen deputy

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Department has created a community journal for Deputy Ryan Thompson – who was shot to death during a gun battle Tuesday near Ellensburg.

The 42-year-old Thompson graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1995. He is survived by his wife Sara and three children, Madison, Pepper and Archer.

Community members are invited to share messages and memories of Deputy Thomson in the journal – on display just inside the 5th Avenue Courthouse entrance in Ellensburg.

"We wanted to provide an opportunity for those who want to share condolences or memories with the family; something that they can hold in their hands for years to come. Anyone is welcome to stop by during regular business hours to share their thoughts," Human Resources Director Lisa Young said in a news release.

The journal will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Monday through Friday and tape and glue sticks are available if the public wants to attach a poem, story, photography or art.

“This community will continue to stand together and support each other,” Young said. “This is a small community and everyone is sending their love and strength to the family and friends of Ryan Thompson.”

A memorial service for Deputy Thompson will be held Thursday afternoon on the campus of Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
