POULSBO, Wash. — The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office posted body cam video of deputies rescuing a man they say crashed after speeding away from police before his car caught fire.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incident started on Sept. 21 around 10:30 p.m.
Deputies said a driver was going 20 mph over the speed limit on Highway 104 in Poulsbo. Instead of pulling over for law enforcement, he sped off, hitting speeds of up to 111 mph.
Deputies lost sight of the driver, but soon found tire tracks on Miller Bay Road NE.
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver crashed through a fence and hit a tractor in a yard before the SUV burst into flames.
Body camera video shows a sky hazy from the smoke and the man yelling for help.
A Kitsap County deputy worked to get the man out of the burning car, and a Port Gamble sergeant used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, the sheriff’s office said.
The man was airlifted to the hospital due to the extent of his injuries.
When he recovers, he could face charges for attempting to elude an officer and reckless driving, the sheriff’s office said.
