‘They killed my son’: Mother of man killed by deputy in Auburn says shooting could have been prevented

AUBURN, Wash. — An investigation is underway after a deputy with the King County Sheriff’s Office shot and killed a 32-year-old man in Auburn on Saturday.

The shooting happened at around 3 p.m. in the 800 block of 8th Avenue SE, near Les Grove Park.

Officials said a person at a nearby car wash flagged down the deputy and reported seeing a man firing a gun in the backyard of a nearby house. The deputy then went to the home to investigate.

The deputy first spoke with a woman outside the house before the man came out. Officials said the man and deputy got into an altercation and the man was shot.

“They killed my son,” the man’s mom, Fay Showalter, told KIRO 7 at the scene. “They didn’t have to shoot at him... he was bleeding out, and they handcuffed him. My daughter told them to stop. Then he was dead. They were handcuffing him dead.”

The deputy was not injured and was placed on administrative leave which is standard following officer-involved shootings.

The Valley Investigative Team is investigating the shooting.
