SEATTLE — Homegrown is preparing to close its downtown Seattle and Mercer Island sandwich shops as the company shifts its focus to catering.

The Seattle location at 999 Third Avenue and the Mercer Island shop at 3016 78th Avenue SE will both close around Nov. 25, as Homegrown posted a notice in the window indicating its closure, according to The Puget Sound Business Journal.

The notice in the window reads, “Come see us during our last 30 days of business. Thanks for the support all these years, Seattle.”

Both locations temporarily closed over unpaid taxes in 2025

In late 2025, Homegrown underwent a temporary closure of these same two locations after the Washington Department of Revenue revoked the shop’s business license due to two instances of unpaid taxes and/or penalties totaling more than $472,000. The store reopened just two weeks later.

In July 2024, the company closed 10 of its sandwich shops across King County, including its Capitol Hill, Kirkland, Queen Anne, Redmond, South Lake Union, Southcenter, and U-Village locations. Ultimately, 158 employees were laid off as a result of the closures.

Homegrown CEO and co-founder Brad Gillis previously stated that economic impacts, rising labor costs, and food prices led to the decision in 2024.

“This decision was incredibly difficult to make, but one that we feel was absolutely necessary,” Gillis previously stated. “Through our two remaining stores, we will continue our mission of ‘growing with purpose,’ serving our communities with quality, sustainable food, and playing our part in changing the food system so future generations can live in greater harmony with the earth.”
