Fire rips through Tacoma apartment building, displacing 75 people

Dozens of people were forced out of their homes after a fire broke out at a Tacoma apartment building overnight.

Crews were called to the Forest Hill Village Apartments at S 41st Street near S Tyler Street at 1:21 a.m. Monday. Officials said when firefighters arrived, three apartments were engulfed in flames.

About 20 minutes later, a second alarm was called to summon more firefighters.

The flames were fought defensively from outside the building and the roof collapsed over three apartments, but firefighters were able to save 16 units.

Thirty apartments were affected.

Two people were hurt. One was taken to hospital with minor injuries and the other was treated at the scene.

Authorities said the Red Cross is helping 75 people who were displaced.

As of 5 a.m., firefighters were still at the scene putting out hot spots.

Officials said 20 fire units battled the flames.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
