FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — All the occupants of Crestview West Apartments on Pacific Highway South in Federal Way were displaced Thursday after a fire spread through the building, according to South King Fire & Rescue.
The Department said the fire started shortly after 2 p.m. on the second floor of the complex and spread to the third floor.
According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, the fire department requested a fire investigator to review the scene.
All 40 occupants have been asked to vacate the building for at least one night while fire crews work to clean up the scene.
Initially, the American Red Cross reported 25 people were displaced.
The Red Cross posted a statement on social media that it has a crew on scene to provide resources to building occupants.
A shelter has been created for those who will be put out for the night. That shelter is located at the Federal Way Community Center, 876 S 333rd St.
“If there is time to safely do so, evacuees are encouraged to bring the following for each member of their family: prescription and emergency medication, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents, and other comfort items. Additionally, special items for children and infants, such as diapers, formulas, and toys, can be helpful for longer shelter stays,” the Red Cross wrote.
As of 8:15 p.m., the sheriff’s office said the cause of the fire was accidental and that it started in someone’s kitchen. The sheriff’s office said it started from an unattended kitchen fire with oil and French fries on a stovetop.
