The United States Food and Drug Administration, in a statement on August 22, issued a recall of all alfalfa produced by the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands, citing contamination with Shiga toxin, which can cause E. coli and Salmonella.
Data released by the department show that one person has gotten sick in Washington from the toxin, with most cases concentrated in the brands’ home states of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
According to the statement, recalled sprouts are packaged in 5-oz plastic containers with lot numbers 222, 223, 225, 226, and 230. These same Alfalfa sprouts were also used in Everything Sprouts Crunchy Protein Sprout Mix 5-oz cups, LOT# 222, 223, 226, 230, and the Zesty Garlic Mix cups, LOT# 222, 223, 225, 226, and 230.
The department warned that symptoms of either illness are likely to occur in the first few days after consuming the toxin.
Symptoms of E. Coli can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. The severity or presence of certain symptoms may depend on the type of bacteria causing the illness.
In severe cases, the department says, E. Coli can cause life-threatening organ damage or failure.
The department advised choppers in Minnesota and Wisconsin that the products have been recalled but noted that the produce may have been distributed to other states.
