Fatal head-on crash shuts down State Route 525 on Whidbey Island

ISLAND COUNTY, Wash. — A woman died in a head-on collision on Whidbey Island on Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened at 1 p.m. on State Route 525 at Campbell Road and shut down all lanes, which were reopened at 7:17 P.M.

A Washington State Patrol trooper said a 39-year-old female driver of a Ford Explorer came off the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry and was reportedly driving erratically.

The Explorer then hit a Mercedes head-on, troopers said.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 78-year-old Everett man, was injured and his passenger, a 77-year-old Everett woman, died. Troopers said both had to be extricated.

The 78-year-old man, who was in serious to critical condition, was taken to Providence Hospital in Everett.

Troopers said the driver of the Explorer was found outside of her vehicle. It is unknown if she was ejected or escaped on her own.

She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

Her Explorer also caught fire.

Troopers said drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash but the investigation remains ongoing.
