‘Extreme conditions’ prompt Stage 2 burn ban in King County

SEATTLE — King County Fire Marshal Chris Ricketts on Tuesday issued a Stage 2 burn ban for King County.

Any outdoor fire, like a backyard fire pit or campfire using firewood or charcoal, is prohibited.

Manufactured portable outdoor devices like barbeques and patio warmers are allowed, but must be used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Click here for more information on what is allowed.

King County was already in a Stage 1 burn ban. The Stage 2 burn ban goes into effect immediately and comes after the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag fire danger warning for Northwest Washington that will last through Wednesday.

Officials said high temperatures, gusty winds and low humidity have prompted both warnings. Wildfires in Eastern Washington and Oregon have also led to reduced air quality in the PNW.

Anyone who fails to immediately extinguish or discontinue their recreational fire when told to do so can be charged with a misdemeanor.

Under the ban, any person with a recreational fire who fails to take immediate action to extinguish or otherwise discontinue such burning when ordered or notified to do so can be charged with, up to and including, a misdemeanor.

Ricketts is also reminding people who smoke to use extreme caution when they’re putting out their cigarettes.

“The conditions – high temperatures, wind, low humidity – mean everyone should be on high alert about fire safety,” Ricketts said. “Things can become dangerous – and tragic – extremely fast with these conditions. Everyone should be careful.”
