Exclusive video shows triple shooting at Edmonds market; highlighting DV dangers

Through a public records request, KIRO 7 obtained harrowing surveillance footage showing the moment when a gunman shot three people inside a grocery store, including his estranged wife. One of the wife’s friends later died of her injuries.

The incident happened on September 29, 2020, at the Boohan Oriental Market. Police quickly discovered the shootings were the result of domestic violence.

According to surveillance footage, Duy Nguyen arrived at the store to talk to his soon to be ex-wife.

Instead of interacting with him, video shows that she quickly darted away from him, when she then cowered behind another employee.

Nguyen then left the store. In the moments that followed, his wife’s friends arrived at the store to comfort her.

Nguyen returned minutes later, catching the attention of his wife. Witnesses said she was distraught.

From there, security video shows her leaving the store as her friends consoled her. Moments later, footage shows Nguyen leaving the store as well.

According to surveillance footage, he immediately pulled out a gun and fired directly at his wife and her two friends. At least eight shots were fired. Inside the market, customers and employees feared they’d be shot too and quickly took cover.

Nguyen’s wife survived this shooting, but her friend later died at the hospital.

As Nguyen faces murder charges, domestic violence experts said this case highlights a worrying trend.

That’s because they say domestic violence victims are often too afraid to actually get help from law enforcement.

“It is important to widen that safety net to include people that are kind of a neutral party,” said Jill Schick, DV Coordinator for the City of Edmonds.

In the end, domestic violence counselors cannot stress it enough: trust your instincts.

“If the hair on the back of your neck is raising that (someone is a danger), that is your biological response that you are not safe. And you need to listen to that,” Schick said.

Nguyen’s wife, and the boyfriend of the woman who died, both made full recoveries after this shooting.

Nguyen is currently facing murder and assault charges. His trial date is still undetermined.
