LAKEWOOD, Wash. — A man is in custody after a wild pursuit with Pierce County deputies ended in Lakewood.
Early Monday morning, deputies spotted a driver in a pickup truck speeding. Dash cam footage shows him driving past deputies before investigators tried to pull him over and began a pursuit.
The footage eventually shows the driver taking a turn too quickly, smashing through a guardrail and crashing near the corner of 40th Ave SW and 96th St SW.
He then got out of the car and ran, with deputies following close behind.
“I’m faster than you!” one deputy is heard shouting at the driver.
The footage then shows the man lunging at a deputy before they both hit the ground.
Investigators said they put the man in cuffs, went through his crashed truck and found empty beer cans, a shotgun with a drum magazine and several other guns.
“I know people that have tried to run from the law, and it’s never worked out,” Pierce County resident Conrad Shock said.
Shock was shopping in the area Sunday and told KIRO 7 the case hit close to home for him because he was hit by a reckless driver and now relies on a cane.
“A reckless driver shattered my spine, hip, my arm and drove away about nine years ago,” he said.
Shock said he’s just glad the driver hit a fence and not a person.
“I’ve been on the receiving end of a reckless driver and it’s not funny,” he said. “This guy could have done the same thing. He’s lucky he didn’t kill somebody.”
The driver was arrested for felony eluding, reckless driving, DUI, resisting arrest and third-degree assault.
