TACOMA, Wash. — The devastating Spokane wildfires are now sparking the spirit of giving in Pierce County where a donation drive is going on through the weekend – a benefit to help fire victims’ families get kids ready to go back to school.
Garry Gill, owner of Garry’s On Pearl in Tacoma, says the past several years, they’ve gathered school supplies to donate to local kids, but this year it was time to switch it up because of the fires.
“It’s hard to imagine kids not having anything to shape a better future for them… this is what we need to do,” said Gill.
Korum Ford in Puyallup is also taking donations for the benefit.
“Happy to have you come in, bring us a backpack or any school supplies or anything you might have for those people in Spokane that are suffering,” said General Manager Brett Solomon.
Donations will help families like Brittany Bogardus and her three kids who lost nearly everything in the fires.
“We could really use the help right now because I’m not able to provide the schooling at this time. Losing everything and trying to rebuild is already hard. We can use all the help we can get,” said Bogardus.
Pierce County residents are showing they are more than eager to help.
“Anything to help the community is great, even if it’s not our backyard,” said April Easton, who donated dozens of supplies.
Donations will be accepted through Monday.
Then they will be loaded up and driven to Spokane on Wednesday.
