SEATTLE — A bright fireball lit up the night sky across the Pacific Northwest early Friday morning.
The meteor was observed between 12:45 a.m. and 12:50 a.m., with reports spanning across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia.
The American Meteor Society defines a fireball as an exceptionally bright meteor. The event occurred during the annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most active meteor showers of the year.
Witnesses across the region described seeing a bright orange or green streak followed by a flash that briefly illuminated the night sky.
There is no indication that the object reached the ground. What many witnesses described as an explosion was likely the meteor breaking apart as it burned up high in the atmosphere.
