Did you feel it? 4.2-magnitude earthquake on the Kitsap Peninsula

BREMERTON, Wash. — A 4.2 earthquake struck on the northern part of the Key Peninsula along the Pierce/Kitsap county line at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday.

That’s about 12 miles south-southwest of Bremerton and less than ten miles northwest of Gig Harbor.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has received many reports of people feeling the quake from the central Puget Sound near Seattle south to Lewis County and east into the Cascade foothills.

The KIRO 7 Newsroom received calls from viewers feeling the quake in Des Moines, Tacoma, and Olympia but no damage was initially reported.

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network also asks anyone who felt it to fill out a report here.

The USGS has also issued an aftershock forecast for the next week, noting a heightened risk of aftershocks, and about a one percent chance of another earthquake even stronger than 5.0.

However, they expect several smaller aftershocks — up to eight of a magnitude of 3.0 or greater.

KIRO 7 Chief Meteorologist Morgan Palmer says as each hour and day goes by after the initial earthquake, the chances for significant aftershocks will lessen or “decay” as the ground stabilizes in the region.
