SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A Spokane Valley School Resource Deputy shot and killed a man with a gun who approached Evergreen Middle School.
It happened Tuesday morning.
No students or staff were hurt.
The incident began at approximately 11:30 a.m. when someone called 911 about a suspicious man walking toward the school grounds.
According to the sheriff’s office, the caller reported seeing a man walking across the football field toward the school while sweating and adjusting his waistband.
Minutes later, the caller reported the man was armed with a black and silver Glock 19 handgun.
A Spokane Valley School Resource Deputy arrived at the scene within 5 minutes of the initial call.
School administrators immediately enacted security protocols and placed the facility on lockdown before law enforcement arrived.
Initial information indicates the man approached the arriving deputy and presented a threat with what appeared to be a gun. The deputy fired his weapon, hitting the man.
Deputies requested medical personnel and provided emergency aid, but the man died.
During the incident, the Spokane Regional Explosives Disposal Unit responded to inspect a bag that the man reportedly tossed near the school. Because technicians could not immediately rule out an explosive device, staff and students were relocated to a secure location inside the building.
Deputies conducted a search of the school building and grounds to ensure no additional suspects or hazardous items were present.
Authorities eventually bused students to Valley Real Life Church, where they were reunited with their families.
The Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
