UNIVERSITY PLACE — Detectives with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department are asking for the public’s help to identify a possible witness to a carjacking in University Place earlier this month.
Around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 9, deputies say a woman called to report that she had been carjacked.
The woman told deputies she was parking her car along Market Place W. when a suspect opened her door and made her get out.

When the woman tried to grab her purse, deputies say the suspect threatened to shoot her. The woman did not see a weapon, but said the suspect had his hand in his sweatshirt – implying he had one.
The suspect then left in the woman’s car, but the car was later found by deputies.
Deputies said surveillance video from a nearby business showed a man in the area around the time of the carjacking.
According to deputies, the man seen in the video is “only considered a witness” and they are hoping to talk to him.
Anyone with information on who the man is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department.
