Deputies arrest suspect who barricaded himself inside Subway

WHITE CENTER, Wash. — Deputies arrested a suspect armed with a knife after they say he barricaded himself at a Subway in White Center on Monday evening.

Investigators said the incident started with a 911 call from a nearby car where a family member reported the suspect had assaulted them and damaged their car.

When deputies tried to take the suspect into custody at the Safeway, the man pulled out a knife.

Investigators said deputies used Tasers on him during a struggle, but it had no effect.

Authorities said the man then charged at one of the deputies with a knife, then turned towards the people in the restaurant. Fearing for everyone's safety, the deputy fired one shot at the suspect, but it did not hit him, the King County Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect then ran into the back of the Subway, and barricaded himself in the kitchen.

“The suspect had a screwdriver in his hand and he started to slash at the SWAT team. He was about to get free and he took a slash with the screwdriver toward one of the SWAT officers,” said King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Ryan Abbott.

After two hours, a SWAT team opened the back door of the Subway and ordered the suspect to come out.

Deputies said the suspect came out fighting and they fired Tasers and rubber bullets at him.

The suspect fell to the ground and deputies took him into custody.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

KIRO 7 was there as the standoff came to an end.

Deputies said 29-year-old suspect was wanted for escape, domestic violence and assaulting an officer.

The King County Sheriff's Office confirmed to KIRO 7 that the suspect has been identified as Walter Montoya.
