Confederate monument toppled at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle

SEATTLE — A stone monument for Confederate veterans of the Civil War was toppled Saturday in Lake View Cemetery.

The monument, called the United Confederate Veterans Memorial, was constructed in 1926 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

It wasn’t immediately known who toppled the memorial.

In 2017, more than 4,000 people signed a petition and demanded former Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and the city council to remove the monument.

However, because of the ongoing protests over racial justice and the death of George Floyd, who died while in Minneapolis police custody, and the monument was the latest to tumble as many have been pulled or taken down across the nation.

The cornerstone was set the afternoon of Sunday, April 11, 1926. More than 200 Southerners who moved to the Seattle area attended. Daniel F. Dodge, a commander of the John B. Gordon Camp of Confederate Veterans, was an honored guest. Dodge was buried there the following year.
