Concern over high concentration of PFAS chemicals in well water on San Juan Island

SAN JUAN COUNTY, Wash. — New test results are showing dangerous levels of PFAS in well water on San Juan Island.

According to The Seattle Times, the concentration last month was the highest ever recorded in Washington — 164 times the level considered safe.

PFAS are chemicals linked to cancer and other serious health problems.

The high concentration of PFAS chemicals is happening in Harrow Heights, a community of about 40 families on the southside of San Juan Island, opposite Friday Harbor.

PFAS were used in firefighting foam, but in this case the source of the contamination is unclear.
