Burien City Council unanimously approves resolution strengthening immigrant protections

BURIEN, Wash. — After Burien City Council unanimously voted in favor of a resolution that will provide more protection for immigrant communities at its last regular meeting, the consent agenda that included the resolution was approved on Monday night.

“We don’t always vote seven to nothing on things, and we were very together on this - we have been from the beginning,” said Burien Mayor Sarah Moore.

Resolution 542 aims to strengthen Burien’s sanctuary policies by prohibiting city cooperation with civil immigration enforcement without a judicial warrant and prohibiting city contracts with ICE. The resolution also bans the use of city property for immigration enforcement operations and requires city staff to report contacts from federal immigration authorities.

“We have people from all over the world living here, and they’re part of who we are,” said Moore. “We’re a welcoming community that celebrates the strength that our diverse community brings to Burien.”

Three members of the King County Immigrant Rights Alliance showed in support of the resolution.

“ICE is moving quick; the federal government is moving fast,” said Izzy McCabe. “It’s very important that we do everything possible to fight ICE and to make sure, if it saves even one person, then it will have been worth it.”

Burien City Council also began discussing a six-month moratorium on detention centers. A draft for the moratorium is expected at Burien City Council’s next meeting on Oct. 26.
