PARKLAND, Wash. — Deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office arrested a suspect accused of firing a gun from an SUV outside the Lucent Apartments in Parkland at approximately 11:30 p.m Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The alleged shooter opened fire and sent a bullet through a family’s kitchen wall, according to deputies.
No one was injured in the incident, which investigators believe was a reckless act by a new firearm owner rather than a targeted attack.
“This was pure negligence,” said deputy Carly Cappetto. “Negligence of a new firearm owner who recently had gotten a firearm.”
Neighbors living near the Lucent Apartments in Parkland reported hearing gunfire around the time of the incident. A neighbor who identified herself only as Jory said she heard shots outside her apartment building.
“I did hear some gunshots,” she said. “I didn’t know if it really was truly gunshots.”
She added that while she has heard gunfire in the area before, she was uncertain of how many rounds were fired.
“I don’t know how many shots I heard, but I did hear some,” Jory said.
Another neighbor, Manuel Lopez, noted that gunshots are a common occurrence in the neighborhood. Across from several homes, there was a bus stop with shattered glass that seemed to have been caused by a bullet; also, a car along the roadside had a window that looked like it had been shattered by a round.
“I heard somebody shot over this — Yeah, maybe like four or five times maybe,” Lopez said.
Cappetto says detectives have also linked the suspect and his vehicle to several other reckless shooting incidents in the area.
“Further into the investigation, we were able to determine that this is the same suspect and same vehicle involved in at least three other unlawful discharge cases within this month of August,” Cappetto said. “And so, we are going to be looking into those cases as well.”
Pierce County detectives are working to establish whether the earlier cases are directly linked to the suspect. Investigators are asking anyone with photos, videos or information regarding random gunshots or recent shootings since the start of August to call the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office at 253-287-4455.
