Boeing announces plans to make fewer 777s

EVERETT, Wash. — Boeing has announced plans to make fewer 777s starting next summer.

The Daily Herald reports  the aerospace giant plans to cut production from the current rate of just over eight airplanes a month to five a month in August 2017. The decision likely will mean some job cuts in Everett, where the 777 is assembled, though how many and when is not clear.

Boeing made the announcement Monday. Company leaders had previously said they expected to cut production from just over eight airplanes a month to five and one half airplanes in 2018.

The company has struggled to sell its classic - and profitable - long-haul workhorse as it develops a successor airliner, the 777X.
