BELLEVUE, Wash. — The city of Bellevue is working to lower the speed limit for all its neighborhood streets.
On Monday, crews started changing the signs from 25 miles per hour down to 20.
The first phase of implementation will replace or add approximately 180 speed limit signs and 90 pavement markings. This work is happening in the neighborhoods of NE Bellevue, Crossroads, Lake Hills, Bridle Trails, Wilburton and NW Bellevue. The remaining neighborhoods are expected to see their signs updated later this year.
The city council voted nearly two years ago to lower speeds to make traffic safer and reduce injuries and deaths.
The city is also weighing lower speed limits on bigger streets. This would be on streets with 30 miles per hour limits or higher.
The council is expected to take up that proposal later this year.
