Active weekend weather possible: what to expect

Energy for storms graphic

We’re starting a stretch of quieter weather, but there are some changes coming as we head into the weekend.

Low clouds will increase this morning, with some patchy fog and isolated drizzle possible. It will stay gray for much of the first half of the day before gradually clearing to mostly sunny skies this afternoon. Highs will reach the upper 70s and lower 80s, with similar conditions expected Thursday.

The bigger changes arrive on Friday. We’ll start with morning low clouds, followed by increasing high clouds as a trough of low pressure approaches. That system will move through Friday afternoon into Saturday, bringing more clouds and cooler temperatures.

There is also a chance for some mainly mountain thunderstorms Friday into Saturday. An eruption of thunderstorms is far from certain, but we’ll be watching the potential closely because lightning could spark new wildfires.

Temperatures will drop noticeably behind the system, with highs in the 60s to low 70s to start the weekend. East of the Cascades, it will become breezy late Friday into Saturday, with showers and thunderstorms possible.

A few lingering showers could continue Sunday, with temperatures recovering into the low to mid-70s.

So, after a few more days of summer-like weather, the weekend looks like a definite step toward cooler, more unsettled conditions. There are no signs of a major heat wave returning anytime soon.
