Friday marks 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
Hijackers took four commercial jets and crashed them into New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Thousands of people died, including the passengers, first responders, and civilians.
Countless ceremonies will take place across the nation – and in our region – to pay respects to those who lost their lives that day. Below are some of the events happening around our area.

Bainbridge Island
The Bainbridge Island Fire Department, the American Legion Colin Hyde Post 172 and the Bainbridge Island Police Department are hosting a remembrance ceremony at 11 a.m.
The program will feature performances by the Bainbridge Chorale. Earl Johnson, a 9/11 survivor and former Bainbridge Island Fire Department Commissioner, will also share his personal experience and reflections.
The event is at Station 21 on Madison Avenue NE.
Blaine (Peace Arch)
Canadians and Americans will gather beneath the Peace Arch for a cross-border commemoration.
There will be a helicopter flyover, performances of the National Anthem, and more.
It will begin at 11 a.m.
Bremerton
A remembrance ceremony will take place at the Kitsap 9/11 Memorial in Evergreen Rotary Park in Bremerton.
The event will go from 6 p.m. until 7:15 p.m.
The memorial is made of 5,000 pounds of steel pulled from the World Trade Center and limestone from the Pentagon.
Edmonds
Firefighters from South County Fire will host a remembrance ceremony at the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Park at the Edmonds Downtown Fire Station on 6th Avenue.
The ceremony will be held in front of the 9/11 Memorial built around a 1-ton beam recovered from the collapsed World Trade Center. The beam is supported by two stainless steel towers above a pentagonal foundation.
It will begin at 9:11 a.m.
Everett
A free 9/11 remembrance program will be held at the Everett Civic Auditorium. It begins at 7 p.m.
Organizers will present a newly recorded anthem based on “The Fireman’s Prayer” and honor the daughter of the Wichita firefighter who wrote the poem.
Federal Way
The Federal Way Police Department and South King Fire & Rescue are hosting a ceremony at the September 11th Memorial at Station 64 on S. 320th Street. It will take place at 1 p.m.
Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way is named after a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93, one of the hijacked planes. Beamer helped lead a group of passengers who fought back and forced the plane to crash, preventing terrorists from reaching their intended target in Washington, D.C. They crashed in rural Pennsylvania.
Gig Harbor
Gig Harbor is hosting an hour-long ceremony at the fire department’s headquarters on Bujacich Road NW.
It will begin at 9 a.m.
According to Gig Harbor Now, the Fire Chief and Police Chief are set to speak, and a fire service honor guard will play their bagpipes.
Issaquah
The City of Issaquah and Eastside Fire & Rescue are partnering to host an event at Station 73 in the Issaquah Highlands.
There will be music from the Seattle Pipes and Drums and an Honor Guard ceremony.
A section of concrete from the World Trade Center will be displayed during the ceremony.
Oak Harbor
There will be a remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at Windjammer Park, followed by a Remembrance Flag Run.
During the run, first responders will carry a special 9/11 Remembrance Flag across Whidbey Island to honor the lives lost on 9/11.
Puyallup
There is a local memorial race being held at Bradley Lake Park. It will begin at 9 a.m. with the National Anthem.
Stanwood
A remembrance ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the North County Regional Firefighter Training Center.
Tacoma
The Tacoma Fire Department Honor Guard is hosting a remembrance ceremony at the Firefighters Memorial on Ruston Way. It will begin at 9 a.m.
At 1 p.m., there will be a community run and walk to honor those who died in 9/11. It will take place at Wapato Park.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue is hosting a ceremony in the evening. It will take place at Reflection Park in University Place. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. and include a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.
Seattle
The Seattle Fire Chief and Seattle Police Department Interim Chief will raise the flag at the Space Needle from 8 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
From 8:46 a.m. to 9 a.m., local fire stations will honor victims by reading the 343 names of the FDNY firefighters who died on 9/11.
Both departments will head to the Lumen Event Center from 9 to 11 a.m. to help pack lunches as part of the National Day of Service, which is hosted by the 9/11 Day Foundation.
A public memorial ceremony will take place from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial Garden near the Fisher Pavilion.
