SEATTLE — Investigators say a 17-year-old who was part of a trio accused of opening fire on undercover Seattle officers has been charged, but as a minor.

On Aug. 12, officers were tailing a gray Dodge Challenger with no license plates near 47th Ave. S and S Othello St., looking for a possible warrant suspect.

The two officers followed the Dodge for a few minutes before the Dodge turned onto S Kenyon St. When officers made the turn, they saw several people standing outside of the vehicle, which was stopped in the street, according to court documents.

As the officer passed, he saw one of the suspects holding a black firearm with what appeared to be an extended magazine.

At least eight shots were fired at the officer’s vehicle, but he was uninjured.

“Officer Rawlins ducked below the dashboard and accelerated at a high rate of speed westbound on S Kenyon St. Near the middle of the block, to avoid being struck by the bullets. He slowed down and looked in his rearview mirror. He could still observe a male subject moving westbound on foot in the direction of his vehicle. He observed at least one male continuing to fire toward my vehicle as he moved westbound. He continued westbound and, at the end of the block, pulled into a driveway. From this location, Officer Rawlins attempted to regain observation of the shooters and position himself to engage the suspects in a coordinated manner with responding Officers,” court documents described.

The Dodge sped off after the officer lost sight of it. A chase ensued with responding officers before the Dodge crashed into oncoming traffic.

One of the men in the Dodge tried to carjack a Prius that was stopped for the crash before officers grabbed him, according to court docs,

A 17-year-old, a 20-year-old and a 26-year-old were arrested and eventually charged.

On Aug. 20, the teen was the last of the three to be charged. Prosecutors say he was charged with first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, felony hit and run, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, and first-degree felony rendering criminal assistance.

There is not an option for him to be charged in adult court, prosecutors say.

“There is a separate ongoing investigation into another case involving the 17-year-old. That involves an attempted robbery investigation at Seattle’s Kerry Park, a robbery investigation at the 7-Eleven atop Queen Anne Hill and a robbery investigation at MC Foods on Beacon Hill and. The 17-year-old was initially booked last week in that investigation, but was re-booked Monday in the South Seattle investigation. The police investigation into those robberies and the attempted robbery is ongoing. An additional charging decision is anticipated when forensic testing is completed as part of that ongoing police investigation,” prosecutors say.
