‘10 Things I Hate About You’ heads to Broadway

"10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU": Ill-tempered teen tomboy Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) glams up in this blue gown in the prom scene from "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999).

An iconic 90s rom-com is heading to the musical stage.

’10 Things I Hate About You’ will make its Broadway debut next summer.

The show is based on the 1999 movie starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. Much of the film was shot in Seattle and Tacoma – including scenes at Stadium High School, Gas Works Park, and more.

Performances are set to begin on August 17, 2027 – 28 years after the movie hit theaters.

According to the show’s website, Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang are writing the book, while Carly Rae Jepsen and Ethan Gruska will write the music and lyrics.

Musical supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements will be by Tom Kitt. Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph the show.

The original film is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ It follows the lives of Kat and Bianca Stratford as they navigate high school. Kat is smart and abrasive – and doesn’t attract many boys’ attention, unlike her younger sister. But Bianca isn’t allowed to date until her older sister gets a boyfriend. Her father will not budge on the rule. So, some classmates devise a plan to get her to fall for someone.

Casting and a Broadway theater have not yet been announced for the musical.
