VIDEO: Ken Griffey's first day in the Kingdome, 1987

This week, we dug into the KIRO 7 archives and found footage of Griffey’s first day taking batting practice in the Kingdome.

It was a Monday in the almost-empty dome. Griffey, who was drafted six days earlier, stopped at the Kingdome before reporting to Bellingham, where he played minor league ball.

The footage is short – less than a minute – but gives a rare look at the 17-year-old Griffey, who was drafted out of Moeller High School in Cincinnati.

During Griffey's first 11 seasons in Seattle, he won 10 Gold Glove Awards, was a 10-time MLB All-Star, was unanimously selected 1997’s Most Valuable Player, and hit 398 home runs.

He retired in June 2010 after 22 years in the majors.
