How a family's backflow preventer saved their house from raw sewage

Julie Rose says they were saved by the backflow preventer installed in their home.

“Especially if you live at a low elevation, like near a lake or somewhere low elevation, you might have a situation where there’s a pump station,” she said.

“And if that fails, or if something like what happened to us happens, water pressure is just going to build up and build up until it’s either coming into your house or not.”

The pressure from the sewage broke some sewer lines and side sewers in the area.

“If you have a backflow preventer, which we didn’t know that we would have, but we do—if you have one, that prevents the sewer water from coming back into your house.”
