A 33-year-old man was hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a domestic violence court order violation prompted a police response Tuesday morning in Yakima.

Officers were called to a home along North 24th Avenue around 7:25 a.m. on Sept. 15 after receiving a report that a man had entered the residence while armed with a firearm.

According to police, the victims inside the home were able to safely leave the residence. Officers initially made contact with the suspect by phone, but communication ended when the call was disconnected.

The Yakima Valley Crisis Response Unit responded to the scene and attempted to negotiate with the suspect. After investigators obtained a search warrant, officers entered the home and found the man suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said medical aid was provided at the scene before the suspect was transported to Yakima MultiCare Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to a trauma center on the west side of the state and remained in critical condition.

Yakima police detectives continue to investigate the incident.
