KING COUNTY, Wash. — As Amazon employees head back to work in downtown Seattle for the first time in three years, the company is announcing plans to shift some workers to offices on the eastside.
According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, 2,000 Amazon employees are going to move their home base from Seattle to Bellevue. It’s unclear which offices those employees would be coming from, but Amazon expects to open two office towers in Bellevue this year while closing at least two office buildings in downtown Seattle.
At least 30,000 Amazon employees did not agree with the new return-to-work policy, according to a signed petition against it. That letter was rejected by Amazon’s head of human resources, according to a leaked memo from Insider.
Amazon posted strong first quarter results amid the latest round of layoffs — about 9,000 employees in the Amazon Web Services and human resources departments are expected to lose their jobs, on top of the 18,000 job cuts that happened earlier this year and last November.
