Amazon launches checkout-free grocery store

SEATTLE — Amazon opened its first full-size checkout-free grocery store in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Neighborhood Tuesday morning. The store is located at 610 East Pike Street -- about four blocks west of the south end of Cal Anderson Park.

Customers need the Amazon Go app to enter the store. Once inside, they can grab the items off the shelves, bag as they go and walk right out of the store. The items will be tracked and automatically charged to the customer’s Amazon account.

This Go Grocery store is about five times larger than other Amazon Go stores. The store offers meat, seafood, fresh produce and bakery items. It also has household items.

Amazon says the store is run on the same kinds of technology used in deep learning and self-driving cars.

Though no employees will be checking out customers, there still are employees there to greet customers, answer questions and keep shelves stocked.
