Aberdeen woman killed while picking mushrooms near Cosmopolis

GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY, Wash. — An Aberdeen woman who had been picking mushrooms near Cosmopolis was found dead in an apparent accident Wednesday.

The Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office said officers were called to the 600 block of US Highway 101 in Cosmopolis near the SR 107 interchange at 4:30 p.m. after a woman flagged down a driver and said her friend was dead on a logging road.

The 29-year-old woman told deputies she and her friend had been picking mushrooms in the area. When her friend did not return to their car, she went looking for her.

The woman found her friend, a 28-year-old Aberdeen woman, on a steep hillside, hung up with vegetation and a mushroom picking basket around her neck.

The friend was able to free the woman before running to the highway to flag down help.

Deputies say they found the body of the woman about 100 yards off the highway. They processed the scene as the coroner's office responded and had the victim removed.

Deputies say the death appears to be a tragic accident in which the victim fell down a steep embankment, got caught up in vegetation and was unable to free herself.
