Sears Holdings has announced that eight Sears and 35 Kmart stores are shutting down.

Before this latest news that came in a July 7 blog post, the struggling retailer had already closed about 250 unprofitable locations this year alone.

Dozens of additional Sears & Kmart stores closing

Chairman and CEO Eddie Lampert said the company is focused on its best-performing stores and returning to profitability.

“Changes in consumer behavior are driving our vision and actions, and we continue to transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members,” said Lampert. “This is part of a strategy both to address losses from unprofitable stores and to reduce the square footage of other stores because many of them are simply too big for our current needs.”

Liquidation sales at the closing stores begin as early as July 13. They will close their doors forever in early October.

Lampert added that the company is on track to achieve its $1.25 billion annualized cost savings target and continues to work to improve liquidity and reduce debt.

The executive said reduced support from some vendors has placed additional pressure on the business.

“I believe the changes we have made will begin to build more confidence in the future of Sears Holdings among our vendors so that they will increase their support and put us on a more level playing field with our competitors,” Lampert said. “While there is still work to do, we are determined to do what is necessary to remain a competitive retailer in a challenging environment.”

Sears Holdings certainly isn't alone in its struggles. Major retailers have already closed more than 4,000 stores in 2017 as shoppers increasingly turn to online and off-price competitors.
