Seattle gets first day in the 60s Tuesday

Tuesday, Seattle reached 63 degrees – the first 60 degree or better day of the year. The average first date of a 60 degree or warmer day in Seattle is Feb. 25, but while this is “late” there are commonly winter temperatures that can occasionally hit 60 degrees. It just hasn’t before March in the past two years (though the three years before that all had 60 degree temperatures in the month of January!) So, realistically, nothing significant can be inferred from a climatological perspective from the fact the first 60 degree temperature is nearly a month “late.” But stats are always fun. The latest Seattle has gone in a year before hitting 60° for the first time was on April 11, 1957 (Sea-Tac Airport) and April 27, 1917 (Seattle Federal Building.)

Through tonight, expect some mild temperatures and some increasing clouds but otherwise a very nice evening. By morning, we’ll have more clouds around and the chance for a few sprinkles or light showers around the area, mainly west of Puget Sound. Morning lows will be in the 40s.

Light rain will move in from the west and we’ll have some periods of showers through the late morning and afternoon. Don’t expect nearly as much sunshine tomorrow. Highs will be cooler accordingly – in the low to mid 50s. In the mountains, there will be some very light snow mainly above 4,000 feet.

Thursday and Friday will be drier as weak high pressure builds. While we can’t totally rule out a chance of rain, most locations will receive no measurable rainfall. This weekend could also be mainly dry but some weak weather systems could at least bring some rain showers to the coast and north on Saturday and Sunday. Rainfall in the interior around Puget Sound – were it to happen – ought to be quite light. Aside from the coast and far north, outdoor plans shouldn’t be greatly impacted by rainfall though the daffodils and tulips in Skagit County could get a light watering, especially Saturday. Highs will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Any mountain snow this weekend should be quite light.

Next week looks a little soggy early with temperatures near average – highs in the 50s.
