Veteran rapper Grand Daddy I.U., ‘Something Good’ singer, dead at 54

Grand Daddy I.U., a New York-based rapper known for his debut album “Smooth Assassin” and its singles “Something New” and “Sugar Free,” died Tuesday. He was 54.

The rapper’s representative, Raya, confirmed the news to People. She also posted a statement on her Instagram account, writing, “No, I am not okay. I’m devastated.”

TMZ also confirmed the death of the rapper, whose real name was Ayub Bey.

The cause of death has not been released.

“The family is awaiting results from his autopsy,” the singer’s representative told People.

Born on Aug. 23, 1968, in Queens, New York, Grand Daddy I.U. emerged as an emcee during the late 1980s and was signed to Cold Chillin’ Records in 1989 after Biz Markie heard his demo tape, BET reported.

The rapper released his debut album, “Smooth Assassin” in 1990, and the singles “Sugar Free” and “Something New” rose to No. 9 and No. 11 on the rap charts, according to BET.

Grand Daddy I.U. appeared on several hip-hop albums during the 1990s, People reported. He guested on Big L’s “Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous” and Positive K’s “The Skills Dat Pay Da Bills,” according to the magazine.

Grand Daddy I.U. released his second album, “Lead Pipe,” in 1994, according to People. His third album, “Stick to the Script,” was released three years later.

LL Cool J honored the late rapper by posting Grand Daddy I.U.’s photo on his Instagram account.

“Rest in power King. HipHop was in your DNA. @granddaddy_iu Thank You for your contribution,” LL Cool J wrote in the caption.
