PASO ROBLES, Calif. — Deputies in California were shocked when they were sent out to investigate a 911 call, only to find out that a monkey had dialed the phone.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that its deputies received a 911 call Saturday night that had disconnected. When deputies went to the address they had traced the call from, they found themselves at Zoo To You, a wildlife sanctuary.
Deputies began talking to staff, who said that nobody had placed any calls to 911, KTLA reported.
In the Facebook post, deputies posed the question, “Was someone trying to make us look like a monkey’s uncle?”
Zoo staff and investigators eventually settled on the idea that Route, the zoo’s Capuchin monkey, had picked up the zoo’s cellphone from a golf cart. Deputies said in the post that since Capuchin monkeys are especially inquisitive and will grab anything and push buttons, it is likely that Route had unintentionally put in the 911 combination.
Deputies told KTLA that they recommended Route call the non-emergency number the next time she wants to have a playdate.
