Kenmore hit-and-run victim's family angrily confronts suspect in court

KENMORE, Wash. — An emotional day in court escalated when the family of a man hit and killed in Kenmore angrily confronted the suspect.

Sydney Jones pleaded not guilty on Thursday to felony hit-and-run charges in the death of Joseph Humphreys.

Humphreys' parents and another family member sat sobbing in a King County courtroom as they awaited the hearing.  When Sydney Jones was waiting with her family in the hallway one of Humphrey’s family members got up to confront her.  She approached Jones asking, “do you see his face when you try to go to sleep?”

Police say Jones claims she didn’t realize how hard she hit Humphreys on October 21 just after midnight. She claimed she was grabbing for a cigarette as she drove down the neighborhood street in Kenmore when she hit him as he was walking along the shoulder.

Police say she returned home and saw the damage to her truck.  So she walked her dog back to the spot and found his body.  Police say Jones initially called 911 saying she found the body as she walked her dog, but that her mom later convinced her to turn herself in as the driver.

Jones doesn’t have a criminal history.  Her recommended sentencing is between 2 and 3 ½ years.

She remains out on $25,000 bail.
