SEATTLE — Seattle police officers said they arrested a carjacking suspect Wednesday morning in the University District after he stole a truck at knifepoint, struck a man on a scooter, and led police on a chase through Capitol Hill and North Seattle.
The carjacking happened on East Madison Street at 29th Avenue East, where city utility crews were at the scene working to restore power after a power pole fell on a building Tuesday.
Around 5:15 a.m., a man pulled a knife on the driver of a truck, which had an attached trailer. The man stole the truck, drove off and a short time later hit a man on a scooter near Sixth Avenue and Yesler Way.
The victim on the scooter was taken to the hospital with a possible broken ankle, police said.
Officials said the suspect then struck two cyclists and a parked car in the 400 block of Yesler Way.
One of the cyclists suffered two broken legs and was taken to the hospital. The other suffered minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.
Police said the owner of the car was standing next to it when it was struck. The vehicle was pushed up against the car owner. No medical treatment was needed.
As the suspect fled from officers, he lost the trailer at Eastlake Avenue East and East Hamlin Street and continued into the University District.
Police stopped and arrested the 35-year-old man near Northeast 47th Street and 17th Avenue Northeast with the assistance of a K-9 officer.
The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment and later booked into the King County Jail for first-degree robbery, attempted first-degree assault, vehicular assault, hit-and-run, eluding, DUI and resisting arrest.
