I-5 reopens in Tacoma after semi hit barrier, closing all lanes

TACOMA, Wash. — Both directions of I-5 were closed for hours in Tacoma after a semi crash early Thursday.

Troopers say a semi-truck heading southbound lost control on the wet highway at about 1:50 a.m. and landed on top of the center concrete Jersey barrier near SR 16.

As has happened in the same area previously, the semi pushed a section of barrier into the northbound lanes.

Traffic was diverted at South 38th Street through the collector-distributor lanes.

WSDOT crews had to replace the damaged barrier and reset the sections that were knocked out of place. They also had to clean up a fuel spill.

All lanes reopened at about 6 a.m.

No one was hurt, and no other vehicles were involved.
