SEATTLE — There is some good news for drivers who take State Route 99 to downtown Seattle and further north.
One of its busy on-ramps is back open a lot faster than was estimated.
Lots of drivers hop on the South Royal Brougham Way on-ramp to State Route 99.
The Washington State Department of Transportation warned drivers the northbound on-ramp into downtown Seattle would be closed from Saturday morning until Monday at 5 a.m.
But 2 1/2 days of scheduled work was done in 2 1/2 hours.
Even a state DOT representative was surprised to hear the work was done so quickly.
Seattle Tunnel Partners say they did close the ramp from 7:30 to 9:30 Saturday morning.
The workers finished building a section of the new ramp alignment.
The busy on-ramp is back open and the DOT says it's not scheduled to close again this weekend.
But the Alaskan Way Viaduct project continues and will eventually shift for the four-lane bypass around the SR 99 tunnel construction zone.
And big changes are still ahead.
By this summer the bypass will split in two as crews continue to build lanes and ramps in and out of the new tunnel.
