Duvall, Wash. — A 47-year-old Woodinville man was arrested after shooting a Duvall police sergeant, which then led to a chase and a three-hour standoff, according to investigators. The altercation started about 10:30 p.m. Monday in Duvall and then stretched 16 miles to Preston, near Interstate 90.

Police said Sgt. Mike DeBock, an 11-year veteran, was called to Holy Innocents Catholic Church on Cherry Valley Road for a report that a man was firing a paintball gun at people on the street. Authorities said when Sgt. DeBock arrived, the man backed his SUV into the patrol car and then fired at least one round from a handgun, which hit DeBock in the left thigh. The officer returned fire but didn't hit the suspect. The officer then got back into his patrol car and started to chase the SUV. Deputies from the King County Sheriff's Office responded to help with the chase, which police said reached speeds of 90 mph.

Investigators said that during the chase between Duvall and Preston, the fleeing man fired at least one shot, which shattered the rear window of a King County deputy's patrol vehicle.

"He's very lucky the round actually shattered the rear window of the deputy's car, went through the car and took out the rear view mirror of the car -- inches from his head -- inches from his head," said Officer Seth Taylor with the Bellevue Police Department.

The driver’s SUV was stopped in the 5500 block of Preston Fall City Road when a spike strip laid out by officers deflated two of its tires. Police said from there, the man fired a shot into the ground and then ran a quarter mile to some mailboxes, where he held police at bay for three hours. Eventually, he was hit in the hand with a rubber bullet fired by police and was taken into custody shortly before 3 a.m.

The wounded sergeant was transported to Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released and is recuperating at home. He is on paid administrative leave while the altercation is investigated.

The suspect is in the King County Jail where he is expected to make a first court appearance Wednesday.
