Car rams through Montlake home in explosive crash

SEATTLE — Seattle police officers and fire rescue were called to the home in the 2400 block of 24th Avenue East just after 1 a.m.  It's right across the street from the Montlake branch of the Seattle Public Library.

Seattle police later said the woman was arrested on charges of DUI and her Breathalyzer test read .031/.034.

The arresting officer said the 53-year-old woman had an odor of alcohol, was swaying, and her eyes were red and glassy.  Police said the woman told them she had been at a bar prior to the crash.

The woman's boyfriend told KIRO 7 a small animal startled her as she was behind the wheel, and she panicked, causing her to back abruptly from her driveway, through a fence, and into the house next door.

Inside the home, part of the rear bumper was visible through a large crack in the wall.  The impact scattered furniture and other belongings around the living room.  Firefighters put yellow tape across the room to keep the couple out of the area that might have been unsafe.  Neither they, nor the driver were injured.
