BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Forty-seven headstones were knocked over in a Bellingham graveyard as police look for vandals.
Bayview Cemetery employees reported on Thursday that that multiple headstones were shoved to the ground with the largest weighing nearly one ton.
Based on the size of the largest memorials, police believe more than one person acted in the offense that happened between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The criminals likely entered and exited the cemetery on foot.
Police wrote in a news release that the cemetery has fallen victim to vandalism before, but this week's magnitude of destruction has not been seen in years.
It could takes up to three weeks to fix the headstones.
"Our city employees recognize the emotional impact of this behavior and are committed to not only restoring the sites properly but identifying the responsible criminals and holding them accountable," police wrote in a news release.
