SEATTLE — A building at the University of Washington was closed off Friday morning after a hazardous material spill, said officials with the Seattle Fire Department.
The incident happened at Benjamin Hall after 9 a.m.
According to fire officials, the five-story lab building was evacuated after hydrochloric acid leaked on the second floor after a student was pulling a container of the acid from a cabinet and fell.
Acid splashed on the student and left him with first-degree burns on his arm.
“That’s what’s great about these modern labs, they’re able to seal it all off so that no other people were in danger,” said Kyle Moore of the Seattle Fire Department.
A hazmat team evacuated the building.
